Humanitarian Crisis in Goma: UN Raises Alarm Over Dire Conditions
The United Nations has issued a grave warning regarding the humanitarian situation in Goma, a city in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) that is currently under siege. The UN described the conditions as “extremely worrying,” highlighting alarming issues such as mass displacement, severe food shortages, and rampant violence against civilians, including widespread sexual violence.
As conflict continues to escalate in the region, thousands of people are being forced to flee their homes, leading to a humanitarian crisis that is exacerbated by the looting of aid supplies and the collapse of essential services. Hospitals are overflowing with patients, unable to cope with the influx of those in need of medical attention. The situation is further complicated by attacks on vital infrastructure, particularly water and electricity systems, which could lead to the outbreak of deadly infectious diseases such as cholera.
According to aid agencies, the destruction of water supply systems poses a significant risk to public health. With limited access to clean water, communities are more vulnerable to waterborne diseases, which can spread rapidly in densely populated areas. The ongoing violence and instability have made it increasingly difficult for humanitarian organizations to deliver critical assistance to those affected.
In an effort to provide a deeper understanding of the crisis, FRANCE 24’s Nadia Massih recently spoke with Eujin Byun, the Global Spokesperson and Senior Communications Officer for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Byun emphasized the urgent need for international intervention and support to address the escalating humanitarian needs in Goma and surrounding areas.
The situation in Goma reflects a broader pattern of instability and conflict in the DRC, which has been plagued by violence for decades. The ongoing clashes between armed groups and government forces have resulted in significant human rights violations and displacement of populations. The international community is being called upon to take decisive action to alleviate the suffering of those caught in this crisis.

As the situation in Goma continues to deteriorate, it is imperative that both local and international stakeholders come together to address the urgent needs of the affected populations and work towards a sustainable resolution to the ongoing conflict.
