The father of an 18-year-old British volunteer fighter who lost his life on the Ukrainian frontline has shared his profound grief and the challenges he faced while attending his son’s funeral. Graham Wilton, from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, described the experience as the most difficult he has ever endured. His son, James Wilton, had recently completed his college education when he made the decision to travel to Ukraine to join the fight against the Russian invasion.
James was killed in July by a drone strike as he attempted to cross an exposed area while carrying a heavy backpack. His friend, an American volunteer named Jason, was with him and tried to provide assistance but was ultimately unable to save him. Graham Wilton revealed that despite his family’s strong objections, including those of James’s mother and sisters, his son was determined to go to Ukraine. He emphasized that James was a polite and likable young man who had a strong desire to help.
During his three months in Ukraine, James received combat training, which he viewed as some of the best days of his life. His father had tried to ensure that James was fully aware of the risks involved in joining such a dangerous endeavor. Reflecting on the tragedy, Graham thanked Jason for his bravery in attempting to rescue James, even though it was in vain.
The circumstances of James’s death were harrowing. As he and Jason crossed open ground, they spotted a Russian drone overhead. In a moment of panic, James froze, and while they attempted to flee, two additional drones appeared. Tragically, James was fatally wounded during this encounter. Jason later recounted how he narrowly escaped injury himself, as one of the drones hovered above him but did not attack.
In a heartfelt tribute, Graham Wilton expressed the emotional toll of his journey to Kyiv for his son’s funeral. He spent two weeks there, bonding with James’s comrades and friends, and described the trip as deeply moving. He expressed gratitude for the friendships he forged with other soldiers who fought alongside his son and wished them well in their ongoing struggles.
James Wilton’s story highlights the personal sacrifices made by individuals who choose to volunteer in conflict zones, as well as the profound impact of war on families and communities.
