It’s no secret that Jason Day has been pushing the boundaries with his on-course attire, but many fans believe he crossed the line during the final round of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Sunday.
Day took to the course wearing a full gray sweatsuit, an outfit that sparked significant reactions from fans and commentators alike. While some supporters appreciate his attempt to modernize golf fashion, others have criticized his choice as inappropriate for a professional golfing event.
The Australian golfer has a partnership with Malbon Golf, a brand known for its efforts to “de-country-club” the traditional golf look. This has led to mixed reviews about his style choices, especially after Augusta National officials requested a wardrobe change during last year’s Masters.
At Pebble Beach, Day’s attire was likened to something one might wear at home rather than on the golf course. One user on X expressed their disdain, stating, “I don’t care how much I get downvoted but he is finding new ways to look like a slob.” Another user added, “An insult to the game,” while a third remarked, “Dressing like John Fetterman should not be an option for professional golfers on the tour.”
Day entered the final round seven strokes behind the leader, Sepp Straka, in a highly competitive field that also included notable players such as Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Shane Lowry, Tom Kim, Lucas Glover, and Cam Davis.
Although Day has struggled to find his winning form in recent years, he did secure a victory at the 2023 Byron Nelson. This win marked his first in seven years, following an impressive run from February 2015 to May 2016, during which he claimed eight titles, including both the PGA Championship and the Players Championship.
As the debate over Day’s fashion choices continues, it raises questions about the evolving landscape of golf attire and the balance between personal expression and traditional expectations in the sport.
