Pundits will spend a significant amount of time in the years to come dissecting the results of the midterm elections in 2022. But there are two things that we can say for certain.
First, Republicans were incompetent. Despite having everything going for them, they were unable to win the Senate and still have a chance of losing the House.
Two, all of the blame is being placed on President Donald Trump. After burdening the Republican Party with an embarrassing and unqualified slate of candidates for the Senate, House of Representatives, and governor’s office, he proceeded to make every race a referendum on himself.
You would think that after Trump led the Republican Party to such an embarrassing loss that he would just slink away and let the party heal its wounds, but that is not the case. Anyone with a shred of decency in their soul would. But not Trump. Put the events of November 8 out of your mind. Forget about holding a runoff election for the Senate in Georgia. He is going to great lengths to ensure that the focus of the party remains on HIM.
His intentions were made clear in a press release that was issued the previous Friday. The statement read, “President Donald J. Trump, 45th President of the United States of America, will hold a special announcement at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida, on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at 9:00 PM Eastern Standard Time.” The outcome of the race for control of the Senate has not yet been determined.
Already, hundreds of invited guests have descended upon Mar-a-Lago for the big event: Trump’s anticipated announcement that he will run for the White House for a third time. Among these guests are many Republican members of Congress, Republican National Committee members, and Republican donors. And for the next two years, Republicans will be compelled to do their best to defend him, unless they completely break ranks with him.
Trump will dominate the conversation at every turn. And they will be compelled to take the side of the loser.
“We are going to win so many times that you are going to get sick of being exhausted. You’re going to tell him, “Please, please, Mr. President, we’ve had it up to here with winning,” aren’t you? In April of 2016, presidential candidate Donald Trump made this proclamation. However, it turned out that the complete opposite was true. Trump is among the most notable losers in contemporary American politics. The Republican Party suffered devastating losses as a result of his leadership, including the White House, the Senate, and the House.
Even though he won the election in 2016 and became president as a result of winning the Electoral College, Trump lost the popular vote by a margin of 2.87 million. In 2018, he was unable to maintain his hold on the House of Representatives. In 2020, he was defeated for the vice presidency by Joe Biden by a margin of 7 million votes, and Republicans also lost control of the Senate. And in this year’s midterm elections, he led the Republican Party to the worst performance of the opposing party in several decades. It is perhaps most telling that voters in five battleground states where Trump tried to reverse his loss in 2020 — Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Wisconsin — rejected by a large majority election-denier candidates endorsed by Trump for governor and secretary of state. These states are: Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Wisconsin.
It is abundantly clear that voters are sick of hearing Trump complain about 2020. But does that signify that Republicans will now definitively distance themselves from Trump and move on?
Don’t get your hopes up too high.
It is true that some prominent members of the party, such as the governor of Maryland, Larry Hogan, the former governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, and the lieutenant governor of Virginia, Winsome Earle-Sears, are spearheading the “Dump Trump” movement. However, we’ve already watched this movie.
At least three times previously, leading Republicans have vowed to break with Trump: at the beginning of his 2016 campaign, when Trump smeared Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona); at the end of his campaign, when the “Access Hollywood” tapes were released; and on January 6, 2021, when he unleashed an armed mob on the U.S. Congress. In spite of this, each time they quickly changed their strategy and crawled back behind him.
What gives you reason to believe that they will exhibit any more courage at this point?
Tonight, before the sun goes down, Donald Trump will make the official announcement that he will run for reelection in 2024. The Democrats couldn’t have asked for any better news. There is no news that could possibly be more devastating for Republicans.
