The Republican Party has become the party of isolationism; will this lead to the United States withdrawing from the world stage?
Since the Cuban missile crisis took place sixty years ago, the current prospect of nuclear confrontation is the gravest the world has faced in recent memory. Concurrently, we are witnessing the growth of an isolationist movement here in the United States. Donald Trump and his support base of right-wing populists have successfully seized control of the Republican Party.
The Republican Party is transitioning into an isolationist party. It is no longer the party that supports the courageous foreign policy pursued by Ronald Reagan or by the Bush family. The position that “We should pay less attention to problems overseas and concentrate on problems here at home” is supported by more than twice as many Republicans as it is by Democrats. A minority of Republicans (only 30 percent) hold the view that “It is best for the future of our country to be active in world affairs.”
Populist isolationism arises whenever a policy becomes difficult to implement or expensive to maintain. The swift and decisive military triumphs that the United States achieved in Granada, Panama, and Kuwait made them quite delighted. The public never accepted President Reagan’s convoluted methods of intervening indirectly in Nicaragua and El Salvador like they did in Iran and Afghanistan.
The words “America stands alone as the world’s indispensable nation” were spoken by Bill Clinton during his Second Inaugural Address in the year 1997. Since the end of World War II, whenever there has been a significant threat to the order of the world or to the values of humanity, one rule has been in effect: If the United States does not take any action, then no action will be taken.
What would have transpired in the aftermath of Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990 if the United States had chosen not to take any action? Nothing is likely to happen. Otherwise, Kuwait would have been annexed by Iraq. After taking action in Kuwait, the first President Bush abdicated responsibility for the issue in Bosnia, which was located in Europe’s backyard at the time. There were no essential interests for the United States in the region. What came to pass? Nothing. As a result of the Europeans’ inaction, the term “ethnic cleansing” entered the lexicon of horror terms used around the world. Finally, the United States of America came to the conclusion that it was ethically obligated to take action and lead a coalition to put an end to the violence. The entire world, including the United States of America, turned a blind eye while atrocities were committed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Congo, and Darfur. So there was no action taken. As a direct consequence, genocide occurred.
The takeaway from this is that the United States of America does not only have national interests but also international ones. Since 1947, this view has been held universally by members of the political establishment. The citizens of the United States of America, on the other hand, have never really embraced the concept of having worldwide interests.
The conflict in Ukraine is the most recent trial. It would appear that ideology has little to do with the battle at this point given that the Cold War is finished. The majority of countries, including the United States, consider Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to be an act of aggression committed against a country in the region. Comparable in many ways to the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq in 1990.
After the invasion, in September 1990, then-President George H.W. Bush gave an impassioned speech to Congress in which he made an impassioned call to internationalist principle. In his speech, President Bush stated that the mission of the United States was to “defend civilized ideals around the world.” This included our commitment to “protect common critical interests,” “support the rule of law,” and “stand up to aggression.”
During his speech to the General Assembly of the United Nations one month ago, Vice President Biden touched on a topic that was very similar. “The end goal of this war, in its most basic form, is to take away Ukraine’s legitimacy as a sovereign nation-state. That ought to give you shivers down your spine.” On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin defends the incursion by arguing that it was not an offensive but rather a defensive move. Putin has issued a stern warning, saying, “If the territorial integrity of our country is challenged, we will, of course, employ all the tools at our disposal to defend Russia and our people.”
Putin considers Ukraine and its people to be inherently Russian, and he is attempting to transform this perception into a “reality” by annexing huge portions of Ukrainian territory into Russian territory. Putin characterized the war as an endeavor to safeguard Russian sovereignty against a West that seeks to use Ukraine as a tool to “divide and destroy Russia” in his address to the Russian public that was given on September 21.
The United States has an interest in avoiding a nuclear war.
Putin stated that “we will undoubtedly use all the instruments at our disposal to safeguard Russia and our people if the territorial integrity of our nation is threatened.” This is not a game of chicken.”
Putin is actually getting some support from far-right conservatives in the United States and Europe, particularly due to the fact that his views on traditional cultural values are in line with theirs. This is particularly the case because Putin is now positioning himself as a strong and tough nationalist, and there is no longer a communist threat.
The disreputable past of the Supreme Court
Former President Donald Trump has referred to Vladimir Putin as a “genius” and has condemned Ukraine for its alleged involvement in corruption and electoral meddling in the United States. As a direct consequence of this, one may observe a resurgence of the isolationist sentiment on the far right of the Republican party. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, only 12 percent of Republicans expressed a “very favorable” attitude of NATO, while 34 percent of Democrats held such an opinion.
Senator Chris Murphy has issued a stern warning, stating, “If Republicans win the House and word starts to get out that they’re done funding Ukraine, that has potentially devastating implications on Ukrainian morale and on their ability to continue out the fight.” It is likely that grassroots conservatives will be the source of populist opposition to the continuation of U.S. aid for Ukraine, and this opposition is likely to resonate with a Republican Congress.
