In a harrowing incident that unfolded in San Antonio, seven police officers were shot while responding to a situation involving a man in crisis, further underlining the dangers law enforcement faces. According to San Antonio Police Department Chief William McManus, the arrival of the SWAT team was necessitated after the initial responders were subjected to gunfire from the troubled individual.
Following a tense standoff that lasted several hours, the suspect was ultimately found deceased within an apartment in the city’s north side. Chief McManus stated that it remains unclear whether the man succumbed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound or if his death was the result of return fire from SWAT officers.
The unidentified assailant was noted to have a troubling history, with three arrests logged on January 18, encompassing charges for two assault-related offenses and one for driving while intoxicated (DWI). Chief McManus disclosed to reporters early Thursday that the suspect was reportedly out on bond at the time of the violent confrontation at the Sonterra Heights apartment complex, located within the 18700 block of Stone Oak Parkway.
This incident ignited shortly before 9 p.m. on Wednesday evening, as reported by KABB FOX 29 San Antonio.

Eyewitness Joseph Loredo, a resident of the apartment complex, recounted the ordeal, stating, “When I went outside, I saw one of SAPD officers had been shot. It looked like a leg wound because they were putting a tourniquet on him and then they dragged him away.” He further captured video footage depicting the chaotic exchange of gunfire between law enforcement and the suspect.
The police chief characterized the suspect as a man in his 40s, and revealed that the initial call to engage law enforcement was made by a family member, illustrating the tragic intersection of gun violence and mental health crises.
