More than a dozen individuals were injured on Monday when a Delta Air Lines flight crashed while landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport amid challenging weather conditions. The incident involved a CRJ-900 aircraft operated by Endeavor Air, a subsidiary of Delta, which was arriving from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
The flight, carrying a total of 80 people—76 passengers and four crew members—encountered strong winds and drifting snow during its approach, leading to the aircraft flipping over upon landing. Eighteen individuals sustained injuries, with at least one passenger reported to be in critical condition.
Delta CEO Ed Bastian expressed his concern for those affected by the accident, stating, “The hearts of the entire global Delta family are with those affected by today’s incident at Toronto-Pearson International Airport.” He also extended gratitude to the Delta and Endeavor team members, as well as the first responders who arrived at the scene.
The crash occurred around 2:15 p.m. ET, prompting immediate emergency responses. Fire crews worked to extinguish a fire that broke out following the accident, while video footage captured passengers evacuating the overturned plane. Witnesses reported seeing the aircraft upside down, and social media posts showed images from those onboard.
In the aftermath of the crash, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy announced that investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) were en route to Toronto to assist in the investigation. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has taken the lead in examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. Duffy noted that he had communicated with Canadian officials to offer support.
As the investigation begins, the focus will be on understanding how the aircraft encountered such severe conditions upon landing and what measures can be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future. The event has raised concerns about air travel safety during inclement weather, highlighting the importance of rigorous safety protocols and pilot training in managing challenging landing scenarios.
