In a bold move to reduce government spending, the initiative led by Elon Musk, known as DOGE, has uncovered potential savings of $105 billion. This effort focuses on cutting unnecessary expenses through lease terminations, contract cancellations, and workforce reductions. So far, the government has already ended 748 leases, saving $468 million each year, and plans to reduce its extensive real estate holdings significantly.
Eric Eggers from the Government Accountability Institute recently spoke about DOGE’s achievements on the Daily Wire’s "Morning Wire." He highlighted the initiative’s goal to slash spending in the federal government, particularly targeting the Public Building Services division, which aims for a 63% reduction. Notably, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has seen an 83% cut in its programs, which translates to tens of billions in savings.
The conversation around government waste has changed dramatically, especially with the rise of social media platforms like X. Eggers noted that the current administration is more transparent than ever, allowing the public to see details about government spending that were previously hidden. For example, the General Services Administration’s purchase of 37,000 WinZip licenses for just 13,000 employees has raised eyebrows and sparked discussions about wasteful spending.
However, DOGE is not without its critics. Some argue that the cuts are minimal compared to the national deficit. The Supreme Court has even intervened to block certain funding freezes at USAID. Additionally, some Democrats are raising concerns that the cuts could negatively impact veterans, as a significant portion of federal employees are veterans.
Job cuts are also on the table, particularly at the IRS, which started with around 100,000 employees. Reports suggest that this number could be reduced by half. Many Americans seem to support these cuts, viewing them as a necessary step for efficiency, similar to practices in the private sector.
