The man accused of killing Minnesota House Democrat leader Melissa Hortman and her husband has been arrested. Authorities confirmed that Vance Boelter, 57, was taken into custody in Sibley County on Sunday evening. This news brought relief to many in Minnesota and beyond.
Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth expressed gratitude for the swift capture of the suspect. She thanked law enforcement for their tireless efforts to ensure justice for the victims. "I’m grateful that this nightmare has come to an end with the suspected murderer captured alive," she said.
Boelter faces serious charges, including two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder. These charges come after a series of targeted shootings in the Twin Cities area, where Boelter allegedly impersonated law enforcement.
The tragic incident occurred at the Hortmans’ home in Brooklyn Park. State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also attacked at their home in Champlin but survived and are recovering from their injuries.
The FBI had been searching for Boelter over the weekend and even offered a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to his arrest. Investigators discovered anti-Trump protest flyers in his vehicle, along with a manifesto that listed numerous lawmakers and abortion providers.
Following the shootings, political leaders from various parties condemned the violence. President Donald Trump also addressed the situation, stating that it seemed to be a targeted attack against state lawmakers. He assured the public that the FBI and the Attorney General would pursue justice vigorously.
This shocking event has raised concerns about safety and political violence, prompting discussions across the nation about the need for greater protection for public officials.
