Federal agents took strong action to clear out a large group of rioters who were attacking an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building in Portland, Oregon, on Wednesday night. The situation escalated quickly as the crowd ignored multiple warnings to disperse.
The protest began peacefully, with hundreds of demonstrators marching to the ICE facility, carrying signs with messages like “No borders” and “Nobody is illegal on stolen land.” Many came prepared with helmets and respirators, indicating that they expected a confrontation. As night fell, tensions rose. Rioters launched fireworks, shined lasers at federal agents, and attempted to block the entrance with a dumpster.
In response to the escalating violence, agents from the Border Patrol Tactical Unit moved in. They used flash bangs, rubber bullets, and tear gas to disperse the crowd. Video footage showed agents firing rubber bullets from the roof while others on the ground made arrests. Ultimately, five individuals were taken into custody, facing charges that included assault on federal law enforcement.
The Department of Homeland Security stated that they would not tolerate such violence. They emphasized that federal law enforcement would continue to enforce the law despite the protests. Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, made it clear that the actions of the rioters would not deter federal operations.
This incident is part of a larger wave of anti-ICE protests that have been occurring in Portland and other cities across the United States. The unrest in Portland has been ongoing for over a week, starting with the “No Kings” protest on June 14. Following the initial attacks on the ICE building, Portland Mayor Keith Wilson reaffirmed the city’s sanctuary status but also stated that the city would not interfere with lawful federal enforcement operations. He emphasized the importance of free speech but warned that violence and obstruction would have consequences.
Similar protests have erupted in cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle, leading to increased security measures, including the deployment of the National Guard in some areas. As tensions continue, the situation remains fluid, with federal and local authorities monitoring developments closely.
