Hamas has until 6:00 p.m. ET on Sunday to accept a peace plan proposed by former President Donald Trump. He warned that failure to agree would lead to severe consequences for the group. This ultimatum comes as part of a 20-point plan aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has persisted for nearly two years following a deadly attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023.
Trump announced the plan during a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the details of the plan are known worldwide and that it offers a path to peace. He called for the release of all hostages and the bodies of those killed in the conflict, insisting that violence must come to an end.
The proposal requires Hamas to disarm and return any remaining hostages. In exchange, members of Hamas who agree to disarm would receive amnesty and the option to relocate safely. Additionally, Israel would need to release 250 prisoners serving life sentences, along with 1,700 Gazans detained since the October 7 attacks, including women and children.
Despite support from Middle Eastern nations like Qatar and Egypt, Hamas has shown reluctance to sign the agreement. Trump indicated that he would give the group a few days to respond, but as the deadline approaches, he expressed frustration with their lack of cooperation. He characterized Hamas as a violent threat and highlighted the heavy toll the conflict has taken on both sides, noting that over 25,000 Hamas fighters have been killed in the fighting.
The former president also urged innocent Palestinians to evacuate to safer areas of Gaza to avoid potential harm. He reassured them that help is available and emphasized that this is Hamas’s last chance for peace. As the deadline nears, the world watches closely to see whether a resolution can be reached or if tensions will escalate further.
