In a recent study, it has been found that liberal women in America are experiencing higher levels of unhappiness compared to their conservative counterparts. The research, conducted as part of the 2024 American Family Survey, revealed that only 12% of liberal women reported being completely satisfied with their lives, while conservative women reported significantly higher levels of satisfaction.
The study identified two key factors that contributed to the happiness disparity between liberal and conservative women: church attendance and marriage. It was observed that liberal women were less likely to be integrated into core American institutions such as marriage and religion, which are known to provide meaning, direction, and a sense of solidarity in individuals’ lives. The lack of involvement in these institutions among liberal women was linked to elevated reports of loneliness, ultimately diminishing their overall well-being.
This trend of conservatives reporting higher levels of mental and physical well-being compared to liberals is not unique to the United States. Studies conducted in other countries like Finland and Australia have also shown similar results, indicating a consistent pattern across different regions.
The research suggests that conservatives generally exhibit psychological traits associated with better well-being, including a stronger belief in personal accountability, emotional stability, and a higher likelihood of being married and religiously active. These traits have been shown to have positive effects on mental and physical health, highlighting the potential benefits of embracing such values regardless of political orientation.
Academic psychologists are urged to acknowledge and explore the underlying principles that contribute to the happiness of conservatives, not with the aim of promoting conservatism, but rather to enhance the well-being of individuals across the political spectrum. By recognizing the value of factors like religion, marriage, personal agency, and resiliency in promoting happiness and health, psychologists can better support the mental well-being of all individuals, including those who identify as liberal.
The findings of this research shed light on the importance of understanding and appreciating diverse perspectives and values, recognizing that different approaches to life satisfaction can offer valuable insights and lessons for individuals seeking happiness and fulfillment.
