The head of the FBI’s New York field office, James Dennehy, was pushed out of his position after sending an email to his staff encouraging them to stand firm during the Trump administration’s scrutiny of the FBI’s investigation into the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Dennehy was given the ultimatum to resign or be fired on Friday, following which he chose to retire. In an email to his team on Monday, Dennehy expressed pride in representing a group of professionals dedicated to upholding the truth and the law.
His departure comes amidst a larger reshuffling within the FBI, with several other top officials also being replaced. Dennehy, along with others, reportedly prevented a more extensive removal of FBI agents and officials over controversial cases.
