A 64-year-old hockey goalie tragically died during a beer league game in Jacksonville, Florida, after being hit in the chest by a puck. The incident occurred at the Community First Igloo rink on Tuesday night while he was playing for the Kraken Beers against the Fireballs.
The goalie, whose name has not been released, felt unwell immediately after the puck struck him. He left the ice and collapsed near the stands, still wearing his hockey gear. Bystanders rushed to help, performing CPR until emergency responders arrived. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the hospital due to cardiac arrest.
Alex Reed, the director of communications for the rink, expressed the shock felt by the hockey community. He noted, “This was traumatic and unexpected.” Many in the community felt a deep sense of loss, even if they did not know the goalie personally.
Witnesses reported that the victim had no known health issues before the game. Medical experts suggest that the puck hitting his chest may have caused a rare condition called commotio cordis. This occurs when a blunt force disrupts the heart’s normal rhythm, potentially leading to cardiac arrest.
Jerry Stevens, a sports medicine supervisor for Duval County, explained that the timing of the impact is crucial. If the puck strikes the chest at just the right moment, it can trigger this dangerous condition.
