Over 20 People Feared Dead Following Terror Attack in Kashmir

More than 20 people are feared dead after gunmen attacked tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir. The incident occurred on Tuesday near Pahalgam, a popular resort town known for its scenic beauty. Police have labeled the shooting a "terror attack," attributing it to militants opposing Indian rule in the region.

Omar Abdullah, a prominent local politician, commented on the severity of the attack, stating it is one of the largest assaults on civilians in recent years. Initial reports indicated that at least five people had died, with eight others injured. Many of the victims were tourists who suffered gunshot wounds and were rushed to nearby hospitals.

The gunmen targeted visitors at Baisaran meadow, a well-known spot just three miles from Pahalgam, which attracts hundreds of tourists daily. This area has become increasingly popular as violence in Kashmir has decreased in recent years.

Amit Shah, India’s Home Affairs Minister, expressed his sorrow over the attack and vowed that those responsible would face severe consequences. He announced his plans to meet with security officials in Srinagar to discuss the situation further.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a key figure in the Kashmiri resistance, condemned the attack, calling it cowardly and contrary to the welcoming spirit of Kashmir. He emphasized that such violence is unacceptable.

The conflict in Kashmir has a long history, with militants fighting against Indian governance since 1989. This ongoing struggle has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands, including civilians and security forces. The region remains a point of contention between India and Pakistan, both of which claim Kashmir in its entirety.

As the situation unfolds, authorities have launched a manhunt to apprehend the attackers, and the death toll continues to be assessed.
