‘Alligator Alcatraz’ Faces New Rivalry with the ‘Speedway Slammer’

The Trump administration is teaming up with Indiana to open a new ICE detention facility called the “Speedway Slammer.” This facility will be modeled after Florida’s notorious “Alligator Alcatraz” and will be located at the Miami Correctional Facility, about 60 miles north of Indianapolis.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced the plans, stating that this new facility will increase the capacity to hold 1,000 illegal immigrants at a time. "COMING SOON to Indiana: The Speedway Slammer," Noem said in her announcement. She thanked Indiana Governor Mike Braun for his cooperation in this effort to remove what she called the “worst of the worst” from the country.

Noem also encouraged those living in the U.S. illegally to consider self-deportation using the CBP Home App, a tool the administration is promoting for this purpose. Governor Braun praised the partnership, emphasizing Indiana’s commitment to addressing illegal immigration and supporting federal efforts.

The “Speedway Slammer” comes shortly after the launch of Florida’s “Alligator Alcatraz,” which has been designed to make escape nearly impossible due to its challenging environment and dangerous wildlife. The Florida facility recently began operations, with reports of hundreds of illegal immigrants being deported from there in late July.

This new facility in Indiana marks a significant expansion of ICE’s detention capabilities and highlights the ongoing national conversation about immigration enforcement and policy.
