The New York Giants are making some notable adjustments to their offseason training program this year. Head coach Brian Daboll announced that the team will increase the number of 7-on-7 drills during practices. This change comes after new quarterback Russell Wilson suggested it, highlighting the importance of situational practice for the team’s offensive development.
Daboll explained that these drills will focus on different game scenarios, allowing players to experience various situations they might face during a real game. He emphasized that while they had previously included competitive periods, they are now placing more emphasis on these drills to better prepare the team. “We’ve done pretty much, I’d say every day we’ve done a little bit of that,” he noted.
This season marks Wilson’s fourth team in five years, and he is eager to adapt to yet another offensive system. The added practice time with defenders will help him learn quickly and integrate with the team. Daboll acknowledged the value of listening to quarterbacks, as they are pivotal in executing plays.
As the Giants gear up for their preseason, they will face the New York Jets on August 16. Before that matchup, the two teams will hold joint practices at each other’s facilities, a move Daboll believes will benefit both squads. He has a strong working relationship with Jets coach Aaron Glenn, which made organizing these practices easier.
In addition to the Jets, the Giants will also play against the Bills and Patriots during the preseason, but no joint practices are scheduled with those teams.
In recent practice updates, rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart made headlines by connecting with tight end Daniel Bellinger for a touchdown during a 7-on-7 drill. Dart also linked up with rookie wide receiver Da’Quan Felton, showcasing the talent of the new players.
On the injury front, starting left guard Jon Runyan returned to team drills for the first time following shoulder surgery. Additionally, defensive lineman Cory Durden intercepted a pass from Tommy DeVito, demonstrating the defensive unit’s readiness as they prepare for the upcoming season.
With these adjustments and developments, the Giants are focused on building a strong foundation for the upcoming season, aiming to improve their performance on the field.
