DHL Express has announced a temporary halt on certain shipments to the United States as new tariffs introduced by former President Donald Trump take effect. Starting on April 21, shipments valued over $800 will be suspended for deliveries to U.S. consumers from any location.
These changes come after new rules implemented at the beginning of April, which require increased customs checks on shipments. DHL stated that this has led to a spike in customs clearances, which they are managing continuously. While business-to-business shipments over $800 remain unaffected by this suspension, DHL warned that they could still experience delays.
Shipments under $800, whether to businesses or consumers, will not be impacted. However, some companies, like a British bicycle manufacturer, are advising U.S. customers to split larger orders into smaller shipments to avoid the complications associated with the new regulations.
From May, shipments from China and Hong Kong valued under $800 will also face duties, according to a statement from the White House. This move is part of an effort to address deceptive shipping practices by some Chinese shippers, who have been known to conceal illicit items in low-value packages.
Previously, deliveries worth less than $800 did not incur duties, which helped low-cost companies from China, such as Shein and Temu, gain traction in the U.S. market. Both companies have indicated that their prices will rise due to these recent changes, starting on April 25.
The new tariff regime is part of a broader strategy to manage trade practices and customs enforcement, but it has raised concerns about the potential impact on consumers and businesses alike. As the situation develops, many are watching closely to see how these changes will affect shipping and pricing in the coming months.
