The Department of Justice is investigating the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation amid allegations of financial misconduct. This inquiry comes after a series of scandals and disputes within the organization. Federal agents have issued subpoenas and executed search warrants related to the foundation and other groups associated with the movement.
The investigation reportedly began during the Biden administration. However, the foundation has publicly denied being the target of a criminal investigation. They emphasized their commitment to transparency and responsible management of funds intended to support Black communities.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California is overseeing the investigation. This scrutiny follows a surge of donations the foundation received after George Floyd’s death in May 2020. The organization reportedly collected around $90 million in contributions, which coincided with nationwide protests and unrest over issues of systemic racism in law enforcement.
Despite the ongoing investigation, no criminal charges have been filed against the foundation or related organizations. This inquiry is part of a broader effort by federal authorities to examine potential illegal activities within leftist groups and to understand financial connections to protests that turned violent.
In recent years, the Black Lives Matter foundation has faced numerous allegations regarding the misuse of donor funds. Reports indicate that significant amounts of money were spent on luxury properties in Los Angeles and Toronto, totaling about $12 million. Additionally, nearly $11 million was paid for contracts, many of which benefited companies owned by family and friends of former executive director Patrisse Cullors. For instance, her brother received $1.6 million for providing security services.
The foundation has also been affected by internal conflicts, particularly with its offshoots like Black Lives Matter Grassroots. These disputes have raised questions about the management of millions of dollars in donations, with some funds reportedly going missing.
As the investigation unfolds, the future of the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation remains uncertain, as does the impact on the broader movement for racial justice.
