A diver died while working to recover the sunken Bayesian superyacht off the coast of Sicily. Local police reported that the incident occurred during preliminary operations on Friday, but the cause of death is still unknown.
The 56-meter yacht, owned by British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, sank on August 19 last year, claiming the lives of seven people, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah. An operation to lift the yacht from the seabed is scheduled for later this month. This effort aims to provide answers about how the vessel went down.
Around 70 specialists from across Europe are currently in Porticello, Sicily, to assist in the recovery. They began their work earlier this week. The plan is to upright the yacht and bring it to the surface, weather permitting.
TMC Marine, a British marine consultancy overseeing the operation, has been contacted for further comments. In the UK, an inquest is examining the deaths of Lynch, his daughter, and others who were aboard the yacht. Among the victims were Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, his wife Judy, US lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda, and chef Recaldo Thomas.
Fifteen others, including Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, were rescued from the incident. The trip was meant to celebrate Lynch’s recent acquittal in a high-profile fraud case related to the sale of his company, Autonomy, to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.
