Spike Lee’s documentary about Colin Kaepernick has been canceled. The multi-part series was set to air on ESPN, but the network, Kaepernick, and Lee have decided to part ways due to creative differences.
In a statement, ESPN acknowledged the decision, expressing appreciation for the work that went into the project, which began production in 2022. The series aimed to provide a personal look at Kaepernick’s life and career, featuring interviews with him. However, reports indicate that disagreements over the film’s direction led to delays and ultimately the project’s cancellation.
Lee confirmed the news to Reuters, stating simply, "It’s not coming out," but he could not provide further details due to a non-disclosure agreement.
Kaepernick, a former NFL quarterback, gained notoriety for his protests against racial injustice, famously kneeling during the national anthem in 2016. This act sparked a national conversation about race and police brutality, but it also led to significant backlash and ultimately his absence from the NFL since being released by the San Francisco 49ers in 2017.
The decision to scrap the documentary comes as Kaepernick continues to be a prominent figure in discussions about social activism and sports. Despite his efforts to return to the NFL, he has not been signed by any team since his departure.
