Florida Proposes ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ for Detaining Illegal Immigrants

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier recently introduced a plan for a new temporary housing facility aimed at illegal immigrants, dubbing it “Alligator Alcatraz.” This facility will be located at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport, about 50 miles west of Miami, right in the heart of the Everglades.

In a video shared on social media, Uthmeier described the airport as an old and mostly abandoned site. He believes that with some construction, it could be ready for use in 30 to 60 days. Once operational, the facility could accommodate up to 1,000 illegal aliens.

During an interview with Fox News, Uthmeier emphasized Florida’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws, stating, “We’re going to continue to detain and deport.” He noted that the state has been actively supporting the Trump administration’s efforts to arrest and deport individuals illegally residing in the country.

Uthmeier’s announcement comes amid reports of increased success in apprehending illegal immigrants in Florida. For instance, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) recently conducted a targeted operation in Tallahassee, resulting in over 100 arrests at a construction site. Additionally, a significant operation in late April led to the arrest of more than 1,100 illegal aliens, including individuals linked to violent foreign terrorist groups.

The choice of the Everglades for this facility is strategic. Uthmeier pointed out that its remote location minimizes the need for extensive security measures, like a perimeter fence. He likened the risks of escaping from this facility to those faced by inmates at Alcatraz, given the presence of alligators and pythons in the area.

Uthmeier stated that the governor has directed state leaders to find suitable locations for new temporary detention centers, and he believes that “Alligator Alcatraz” is the best option available. This initiative aims to provide a low-cost solution for holding illegal immigrants while they await deportation.
