Freed Israeli Hostage Recalls Unbearable Hunger and Harsh Conditions During Hamas Captivity

Eli Sharabi, a 53-year-old Israeli man, has shared harrowing details about his time as a hostage in Gaza, where he was held by Hamas. He was released on February 8, 2025, after being taken from his home in Kibbutz Be’eri during the October 7, 2023, attacks that shocked Israel.

During his captivity, Sharabi described the physical pain he endured, as ropes binding his hands cut into his skin. He recounted suffering from extreme hunger, receiving only a single bowl of pasta each day. This meager portion left him feeling starved, and he lost over 30 kilograms (66 pounds) during his 16 months in captivity. He explained that while one might think a small meal would not be terrible for a day or two, living on such little food for months was unbearable. A dry date, when offered, felt like a feast.

Sharabi’s experience was not just about hunger. He spoke about the physical restraints that caused him constant pain. His hands were tied behind his back, and he was often beaten or humiliated by his captors. He described sleepless nights filled with agony from the ropes digging into his flesh, leaving him desperate for relief.

After his release, images of Sharabi revealed a gaunt figure, alarming many in Israel. He had been paraded by Hamas before being handed over to the Red Cross, a moment that was bittersweet for him. He was eager to reunite with his family, only to learn that his wife Lianne and their two daughters, Noiya and Yahel, had been killed in the October attacks.

Sharabi’s story highlights the ongoing conflict and the personal toll it takes on individuals and families. He has vowed to continue fighting for the release of others still held captive, including a young man he befriended during his ordeal. He recalled a painful farewell when he had to leave his friend behind, promising to advocate for his freedom.

The situation in Gaza remains tense, with ongoing negotiations for the release of remaining hostages and the withdrawal of Israeli troops. The conflict has already caused significant loss of life and suffering on both sides, with thousands dead and many more displaced. As the world watches, Sharabi’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of this prolonged conflict.
