German Chancellor-Elect Pledges to Foster Unity in Europe

Friedrich Merz is poised to become Germany’s next chancellor, promising to foster unity in Europe amid the challenges posed by the new Trump administration and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Merz, who leads the conservative Christian Democrats, faces the immediate task of forming a coalition with the center-left Social Democrats, currently led by Olaf Scholz, who will remain in office for now.

Despite the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party finishing in second place, Merz has made it clear that he will not work with them due to their ties to right-wing extremism. His party, along with their Bavarian allies, the Christian Social Union, secured 28.5% of the votes, giving them a combined total of 328 seats in the 630-seat Bundestag.

Merz, 69, focused heavily on immigration during his campaign and aims to finalize a coalition agreement by Easter. However, experts warn that this timeline may be overly ambitious as both parties will need to reconcile differing views on key issues. Lars Klingbeil, a co-leader of the Social Democrats, emphasized that reaching a deal is not guaranteed.

With Donald Trump back in the White House, Merz expressed the need for Europe to stand together against pressures from both the U.S. and Russia. He stated, "We are under such massive pressure. My absolute priority now is really to create unity in Europe." He acknowledged the importance of a strong transatlantic relationship but cautioned that if it deteriorates, it would harm both Europe and the U.S.

During a recent media conference, Merz outlined three main topics for discussion: external and security policy, immigration, and the economic situation in Germany. He stressed the need for Europe to act quickly and defend itself, especially in light of recent statements from Washington. He also expressed hope that the Social Democrats would be open to dialogue on immigration policies.

Merz has been vocal about supporting Ukraine, stating that Europe must stand firmly by its side and help strengthen its position. As he prepares to take on the role of chancellor, the path ahead will require careful negotiation and collaboration with his political rivals to address the pressing issues facing Germany and Europe.
