A tragic shooting took place at a church in Lexington, Kentucky, on Sunday, leaving two women dead and several others injured. The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Guy House, first shot a state trooper outside Blue Grass Airport before fleeing to Richmond Road Baptist Church.
House was reportedly looking for his wife, who is the mother of their three children. When he arrived at the church, he encountered Beverly Gumm, 72, and her daughter, Star Rutherford, who were preparing lunch in the basement. After asking for his wife and learning she was not there, House threatened, “Well, someone is gonna have to die, then,” and opened fire.
Beverly Gumm was hit in the chest and died from her injuries. House then went outside and shot Christina Combs, 32, who was another sister of Rutherford. Both women were beloved members of the church community. Beverly Gumm was known for her kindness and dedication to helping others, while Christina Combs was a mother of five, including a baby just six months old, and was set to graduate from nursing school in December.
In addition to the two fatalities, House also injured Gumm’s husband, Jerry Gumm, who is the church pastor, and Combs’ husband, Randy Combs. Both men are currently in critical but stable condition. The state trooper who was shot is also reported to be in stable condition.
Star Rutherford described the harrowing moment when she held her mother as she passed away, reflecting on the loss of both her mother and sister. The community is mourning the deaths of these two women, who were known for their loving nature and commitment to their families.
Guy House had a troubled history with law enforcement. In 2022, he was featured as a "Wanted Person of the Week" by the Lexington Police Department for charges related to endangerment of a police officer, vehicle theft, and possession of a handgun as a convicted felon.
The shooting has left the small church community in shock, as many families are closely connected. Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn noted the church is largely made up of related families, making the tragedy even more personal. As the investigation continues, the community is coming together to support the victims’ families during this difficult time.
