Hamas Acknowledges Direct Peace Talks with the US, Urges Trump to Pressure Israel

A senior official from Hamas has revealed that the militant group is currently engaged in direct talks with the United States regarding peace efforts in Gaza. Dr. Basem Naim expressed optimism that former President Donald Trump could play a key role in brokering a deal. In an interview with Sky News, he shared that Hamas has communicated its proposals both through intermediaries and directly to individuals within the U.S. administration.

Hamas’s demands for a potential agreement include a prisoner exchange, a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and unrestricted access for humanitarian aid to the region. They also seek to rebuild Gaza without the forced immigration of Palestinians. Dr. Naim emphasized that Hamas is open to transferring governance if it leads to an end to the ongoing conflict.

He stated, "We are ready to hand over the government immediately if we reach an end to this war." This statement comes as Hamas has been in power since winning the Palestinian elections in 2006. Dr. Naim also mentioned that Hamas has accepted an Egyptian peace proposal that suggests forming an independent body to govern Gaza.

Despite this willingness to negotiate, Dr. Naim defended Hamas’s right to resist occupation. He argued that as long as the Palestinian people remain under occupation, they have the right to defend themselves. He expressed hope that Trump could exert pressure on Israel to end the conflict, stating, "Gaza and Gazans deserve to live in peace and dignity."

In response, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council, James Hewitt, stated that Hamas has not shown genuine commitment to peace. He pointed out that the group continues to hold hostages and has not indicated any intention to stop attacks on civilians.

This development comes as Trump is on a tour of the Middle East, visiting countries like Qatar and Saudi Arabia, but notably not Israel. There were hopes that his trip could facilitate a ceasefire, but the situation remains tense. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has continued military operations in Gaza, which have resulted in significant casualties and an ongoing humanitarian crisis.

As the conflict enters its 20th month, the situation in Gaza has become dire, with over 60,000 reported dead, including many children. The humanitarian needs continue to grow, as aid access remains restricted. Hamas recently released a hostage, an Israeli soldier with American citizenship, and hopes that this will lead to further negotiations.

Hamas’s call for peace comes amid ongoing violence and suffering in Gaza, highlighting the urgent need for a resolution that addresses the humanitarian crisis and the demands of both sides.
