Speaking on the "Morning Wire" podcast, Mullin emphasized that the GOP, holding a 53-47 majority in the Senate, has maintained relentless pressure on Democrats to ensure swift confirmations, particularly following the recent approval of Kash Patel as the new FBI director in a narrow 51-49 vote.
Mullin, who has been a staunch advocate for Trump’s nominees, credited the leadership of Senator John Thune for the efficiency of the confirmation process. He noted that the Senate Republicans did not wait for Trump’s inauguration on January 20 to begin pushing through his cabinet picks. Instead, they took immediate action as soon as the new Republican-controlled Senate convened on January 3, setting the stage for a rapid confirmation timeline.
“The clock has been running non-stop,” Mullin stated, indicating that Thune has kept the momentum going around the clock to pressure Democrats. He explained that once a nominee is reported out of committee, there is a mandatory 24-hour waiting period, followed by a 30-hour debate. However, for certain positions, like that of the FBI director, the debate can be significantly shortened, allowing for quicker confirmations.
Mullin further elaborated on the Republicans’ tactics, revealing that even during weekends when the Senate is not in session, negotiations with Democrats have allowed the confirmation process to continue. This strategic approach has enabled the GOP to confirm multiple nominees in quick succession upon their return to the Senate.
Looking ahead, Mullin expressed that his primary focus for the upcoming months will be on deregulation, particularly in the energy sector.
