Inside the courtroom as the sexual assault trial of French actor Gérard Depardieu commences

Gerard Depardieu, a well-known figure in French cinema, appeared in a Paris court on Monday for the start of a trial related to serious allegations against him. The 76-year-old actor, who has starred in over 200 films, faces charges of sexually assaulting two women during the filming of "Les Volets Verts" (The Green Shutters) in 2021. Depardieu has denied these allegations.

As he entered the courtroom, dressed in black and limping slightly, he drew the attention of everyone present. This trial is expected to last two or three days. Outside the courthouse, around 100 protesters from the #MeToo movement gathered to support the alleged victims, while inside, many of Depardieu’s fans, including prominent actors like Vincent Perez and Fanny Ardant, showed their support. Ardant is set to testify on behalf of the defense.

During the proceedings, Depardieu maintained eye contact with the alleged victims and nodded in response to his lawyers’ opening statements. His defense attorney, Jeremie Assous, argued for the case to be dismissed, claiming that the prosecution lacked sufficient evidence and witnesses. The prosecution, however, countered that Depardieu’s fame gave him an unfair advantage in the courtroom.

Tensions rose during the hearing when actress Anouk Grinberg, who came to support the alleged victims, was removed from the courtroom for contempt. The trial continues, with Depardieu expected to take the stand on Tuesday. This case is significant not only for the actor but also for the ongoing conversation around sexual assault and the #MeToo movement in France.
