James Brolin recently opened up about the secret to his long-lasting marriage with Barbra Streisand during an appearance on the “Today” show. The couple, who have been married for nearly 27 years, attribute much of their happiness to one simple investment: their mattress. Brolin emphasized the importance of a good night’s sleep, stating, “The best investment we’ve ever made is our mattress.”
Both Brolin and Streisand enjoy spending time in bed, often working side by side on their phones and reading. Brolin humorously admitted, “We’re both lazy. We love to sleep late.”
The couple also shared their approach to handling disagreements. Brolin suggested that when tensions rise, it’s best to take a step back and go for a walk. “You learn to take a walk,” he said, highlighting that both he and Streisand practice this technique. He added that even animals take a break from conflict, and humans can learn from that.
Brolin and Streisand were set up on a blind date two years before their wedding on July 1, 1998. Streisand was previously married to actor Elliott Gould, with whom she shares a son, Jason. Brolin has been married twice before, to Jane Agee and Jan Smithers. He has three children from those marriages: sons Josh and Jess, and daughter Molly.
In a candid moment, Brolin revealed that he had been celibate for three years before meeting Streisand, and they didn’t become intimate until their wedding night. He described this period as a time of reflection, saying, “Who needs this?”
Brolin expressed his deep affection for Streisand, calling their marriage “the best thing [he’s] ever done.” He even proposed to her multiple times before she finally said yes, showcasing his determination and love for her.
As they continue to share their lives together, Brolin and Streisand demonstrate that a strong relationship is built not just on love, but also on mutual respect, understanding, and a good mattress.
