Jose Luis Ballester, a young golfer from Spain, made headlines during the opening round of the 2025 Masters Tournament for an unusual reason. He went viral after being caught urinating in Rae’s Creek, a water hazard at Augusta National Golf Club, near the 13th green. This incident overshadowed his performance and sparked conversations among fans and fellow players.
When asked about the incident, Ballester expressed regret. He stated that he had already apologized to the club and was ready to move on. “I already apologized to the club, and I think we just move on from this moment,” he told reporters.
According to Ballester, the situation arose from a lapse in judgment. He admitted that he forgot where the restrooms were located and felt an urgent need to relieve himself. “I completely forgot that we had those restrooms to the left of the tee box,” he explained. In a moment of desperation, he decided to use the creek instead, thinking it would go unnoticed.
The 21-year-old golfer earned his spot at the Masters after winning the U.S. Amateur Championship the previous summer. However, his performance at Augusta was not what he had hoped for. After shooting rounds of 76 and 78, Ballester missed the cut. Despite this setback, he reflected positively on the experience of competing alongside established players like defending champion Scottie Scheffler and two-time major winner Justin Thomas.
Ballester recognized the skill level of his competitors, particularly around the greens. He noted, “These guys are here especially because of how good they are around the greens, how much knowledge they have.” He acknowledged that he has room for improvement, especially in that aspect of his game.
