Kangaroo Leads Police on Wild Chase Following Two-Car Crash in Alabama: ‘I Couldn’t Believe It’

A kangaroo named Sheila caused quite a stir in Alabama on Tuesday when she escaped from her enclosure, leading to an unexpected police chase. The incident unfolded around noon on Interstate 85 in Macon County, between Tuskegee and Auburn. Sheila was spotted hopping along the highway, prompting two cars to collide as they tried to avoid her.

Macon County Sheriff Andre Brunson was among those who couldn’t believe their eyes. In a Facebook live video, he shared his surprise at seeing a kangaroo in the area, recalling a previous encounter with a bear but noting that a kangaroo was a first for him. Fortunately, the drivers involved in the crash and Sheila herself were unharmed.

The highway was closed for about three hours as authorities worked to capture the playful marsupial. Videos shared on social media showed Sheila casually hopping around the busy roadway, much to the amusement of onlookers. The situation was resolved when Sheila was eventually tranquilized on a grassy hill next to the interstate.

Sheila’s owner, Patrick Starr, was present during the capture and later took her to the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine for a check-up. After her adventure, Sheila returned home, where she is now eating and drinking normally. Starr, who runs a pumpkin patch and petting zoo, expressed relief that Sheila was safe and that everyone slowed down during the incident. He described her as a sweet pet, highlighting the bond they share.
