Karmelo Anthony Charged with First-Degree Murder

A 17-year-old Texas teenager, Karmelo Anthony, has been charged with first-degree murder following a fatal stabbing at a high school track meet. The incident occurred on April 2 during the University Interscholastic League’s District 11-5A championship in Frisco, Texas. Anthony allegedly killed fellow 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a dispute over seating arrangements.

Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis announced the indictment after presenting evidence to a grand jury. He confirmed that the jury agreed to the first-degree murder charge against Anthony. If convicted, Anthony could face life in prison.

Anthony was released on a $250,000 bond after his legal team successfully argued for a reduction from an initial $1 million, citing financial difficulties. The case has drawn significant public attention and sparked controversy, especially after a fundraiser for Anthony raised over $530,000. His family has since moved into a $900,000 home in a gated community and hired security, which has further fueled public outrage and racial tensions.

Witnesses reported that the confrontation began when Metcalf asked Anthony to move from under the Memorial High School tent. Anthony allegedly responded aggressively, warning Metcalf not to touch him. After a brief exchange, Metcalf reportedly grabbed Anthony in an attempt to force him to move, prompting Anthony to pull out a knife and stab Metcalf in the chest before fleeing the scene.

Anthony’s attorney, Mike Howard, has claimed that his client acted in self-defense. He expressed confidence that the jury would reach a just conclusion when all the facts are presented. However, he declined to explain why Anthony had a knife at the track meet, stating that it would be irresponsible to comment on that matter at this time.

Metcalf’s father, Jeff Metcalf, expressed his relief that the case is moving forward in the legal system. He hopes for justice for his son but acknowledges that no outcome will bring Austin back. The case is now set to proceed through the court system, with many awaiting the trial to hear the full story.
