King and Queen Witness Flypast in Rome During State Visit to Italy

King Charles and Queen Camilla received a warm welcome in Rome as they began their state visit to Italy. The couple arrived on Tuesday morning at Ciampino Airport, where a red carpet was rolled out for them. They were greeted by dignitaries, including the UK’s ambassador to Italy, Edward Llewellyn.

Upon their arrival at the Quirinale Palace, they were met by Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella and his daughter, Laura Mattarella, who is currently acting in a first lady role following the passing of her mother. The royal couple enjoyed a ceremonial welcome, which included a flypast by Italy’s Frecce Tricolori and the UK’s Red Arrows, displaying the national colors of both countries.

The visit is significant as it aims to strengthen ties between the UK and Italy, especially in the context of post-Brexit relations. Following the formal greetings, the King and Queen participated in a ceremony where honours were exchanged. King Charles was made a Knight Grand Cross with Collar of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy, while he presented President Mattarella with the insignia for a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath. The Queen was also honored, receiving the title of Dame Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy.

Later, the couple visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where they laid a wreath in a solemn tribute. They were accompanied by Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy. After this, they headed to the iconic Colosseum, where they interacted with members of the public, smiling and waving as they took in the historic site.

This visit is particularly meaningful as the couple will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary during their time in Italy. The trip also comes shortly after King Charles’s recent health concerns, as he had been hospitalized due to side effects from cancer treatment. Despite this, he has resumed a full schedule of engagements.

The royal couple was also set to meet Pope Francis in Vatican City, but that meeting was postponed due to the Pope’s health issues. This state visit is seen as a vital step in enhancing diplomatic relations with EU countries and navigating the changing political landscape.
