LeBron James has made a significant decision regarding his future with the Los Angeles Lakers. He is exercising his player option worth $52.6 million for the 2025-26 NBA season. This announcement comes from his agent, Rich Paul, who shared the news with ESPN’s Shams Charania.
James’s choice to stay with the Lakers signals his desire to compete for another championship. However, he has set expectations for the team, which was recently sold for a record $10 billion. James is looking for the Lakers to build a competitive roster, especially as they plan for the future around rising star Luka Doncic.
Paul hinted at the possibility of a trade if the Lakers do not meet James’s expectations this offseason. He emphasized that while James values the partnership with the Lakers, he also wants to ensure he has a realistic chance of winning a title. Paul stated, "LeBron wants to compete for a championship. He knows the Lakers are building for the future… We do want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career."
The Lakers face challenges in upgrading their roster as they aim to support the 40-year-old James, who continues to perform at a high level despite questions about his longevity in the league. Last season, he averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds. The team made a major move last season by trading Anthony Davis to acquire Doncic, but they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Timberwolves.
James recently returned to practice after recovering from an MCL sprain he suffered during the playoffs. He has been working out with his son, Bronny, who was drafted by the Lakers last year.
Looking ahead, James and Doncic will have another season to develop their chemistry on the court. The Lakers will likely focus on making moves that complement both players as they strive for immediate success while also considering the future.
