Natasha Cloud is eagerly anticipating her first game with the New York Liberty. Although she missed the Dream’s recent 80-70 victory over the Mystics due to practice, she has been closely following the WNBA preseason. “I’m itching,” Cloud expressed, showing her excitement for the upcoming season.
The Liberty’s preseason begins this Friday at Barclays Center against the Connecticut Sun. However, Cloud and her teammates will have to wait a bit longer to hit the court. Notably, star player Breanna Stewart is not expected to participate in the opener as she continues her recovery from knee surgery. She is slated to make her preseason debut on Monday against the Toyota Antelopes from Japan’s Women’s Basketball League in Eugene, Oregon.
As of now, the Liberty are the only team in the WNBA that has yet to play a preseason game. Coach Sandy Brondello explained that the scheduling was not intentional but rather a result of arena availability. “Sometimes it’s just out of our hands,” she said, acknowledging that they would have preferred to start earlier.
During training, the Liberty have been simulating game situations with a practice squad made up of men. While this helps, Cloud and her teammates agree that nothing compares to the experience of playing against another team. Jonquel Jones noted that the extra practice is beneficial, especially for newcomers trying to secure a spot on the roster.
Cloud raised concerns about player health, suggesting that teams should consider delaying preseason games. “It’s reckless for our bodies,” she said, advocating for a longer preparation period before games.
The Liberty are gearing up to defend their title when they host the Las Vegas Aces on May 17 at Barclays Center. With training camp underway, the team is focused on building chemistry and getting ready for the season ahead.
