Lucie recalled visiting her father and witnessing him take a brave step. He stood up in front of others and said, "My name is Desi, and I’m an alcoholic." This admission was particularly meaningful for Lucie, who described her father as a complicated man. She noted that it took him a long time to reach this point of acceptance.
The Arnaz family has faced challenges with alcoholism. Lucie’s brother, Desi Jr., had sought treatment for his own struggles, while Desi Sr. was initially reluctant to seek help. However, after the death of his second wife, Edie Hirsch, in 1985, Desi recognized he needed to change. Lucie shared that he finally asked her brother for help, saying, "I can’t do this anymore."
Desi began to confront his issues and take responsibility for his actions. Lucie felt immense pride in her father for finally understanding his condition. Unfortunately, this realization came too late, as Desi was diagnosed with lung cancer shortly after. He passed away in 1986, just a year after he began his journey towards recovery.
