Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic nominee for mayor in New York City, faced tough questions about Hamas during an interview with Fox News. Host Martha MacCallum pressed him multiple times to clarify his stance on whether Hamas should disarm and step down from leadership in Gaza.
Mamdani, who is running in a competitive election against former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, avoided giving a direct answer. When asked if he believed Hamas should lay down its weapons, he emphasized the need for peace and justice, without explicitly calling for disarmament. He stated, “I think those are bodies and remains that should absolutely be returned,” referring to the deceased hostages, including American citizens, but did not take a clear position on Hamas’s future.
His reluctance to comment on Hamas comes amid ongoing scrutiny of his views on Israel and Palestine. Many in New York City, which has a significant Jewish population, are closely watching his campaign. Mamdani’s focus, he said, remains on making New York City more affordable for its residents.
As Election Day approaches on November 4, Mamdani is currently leading in polls, showing a strong position in the race. The candidates are set to debate soon, which could provide further insight into their policies and perspectives on critical issues.
