This week, nearly all Republican members of Congress expressed strong support for former President Donald Trump’s stance on Iran. A letter signed by 177 out of 220 House Republicans and every GOP senator except one urged Trump to push for the complete dismantling of Iran’s uranium enrichment capabilities.
The initiative was led by Senator Pete Ricketts from Nebraska and Representative August Pfluger from Texas. The only Republican senator who did not join the effort was Rand Paul from Kentucky.
In their letter, the lawmakers praised Trump for his commitment to securing a deal that would eliminate Iran’s nuclear program. They highlighted his decision to withdraw from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which they described as flawed. The previous deal, they argued, allowed Iran to sell oil and build its nuclear program while lifting United Nations sanctions.
The signatories criticized the Biden administration for reversing Trump’s policies, claiming that this has allowed Iran to advance its nuclear capabilities. They pointed out that under the current administration, Iran has been able to sell oil at levels similar to those allowed by the JCPOA and has received waivers to continue its nuclear development.
The letter also referenced a recent report from the International Atomic Energy Agency, which stated that Iran’s nuclear activities over the past four years have made it difficult to track the country’s nuclear materials and capabilities. The lawmakers warned that Iran is now closer to a nuclear breakout than ever before.
Citing Trump’s previous statements, they emphasized that Iran’s nuclear program poses a serious threat to the U.S. and the world. They concluded by urging the administration to take a firm stance against any agreement that would let Iran continue enriching uranium.
This call to action reflects a unified Republican front on the issue, reinforcing their belief that Iran must be held accountable for its nuclear ambitions.
