Nancy Mace Announces Bid for Governor of South Carolina

Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace officially announced her campaign for governor of South Carolina on Monday, making her intentions clear at a rally held at The Citadel, her former military college. Mace is entering a competitive Republican primary for the 2026 election, joining a field that includes Rep. Ralph Norman, Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, Attorney General Alan Wilson, and state senator Josh Kimbrell.

At the rally, Mace expressed her determination to bring change to South Carolina, stating, “I’m running for governor because South Carolina doesn’t need another empty suit. It needs a governor who will fight for you and your values.” She emphasized her commitment to transparency and accountability, vowing to confront challenges head-on.

Mace’s announcement comes as current Governor Henry McMaster, a fellow Republican, is term-limited and unable to seek re-election. This opens the door for new leadership in the state.

In a video shared on social media, Mace highlighted her unique position in politics, noting how she has faced criticism from both sides of the aisle. She included clips of former President Donald Trump praising her toughness, despite their complicated history. In 2022, Trump endorsed her primary opponent after Mace publicly criticized him following the January 6 Capitol riot. Nevertheless, she won her primary and was re-elected in 2024, currently serving her third term in the House.

Mace has made headlines for her controversial stances, particularly on issues related to gender identity. She has been vocal about keeping trans-identifying men out of women’s bathrooms, a topic she recently debated with Delaware Democratic Rep. Sarah McBride. Mace introduced a resolution in Congress aimed at restricting access to women’s facilities, which has drawn both support and opposition.

Known for her assertive personality, Mace has not shied away from controversy. Earlier this year, she made headlines during a House hearing when she shared a personal photo to illustrate her concerns about privacy and consent. She accused four men, including an ex-fiance, of sexual abuse, a claim they have denied.

Throughout her political career, Mace has positioned herself as a strong advocate for women and girls, stating during the hearing, “I would run through a brick wall to protect women and girls in South Carolina.” As she embarks on her gubernatorial campaign, it remains to be seen how her bold approach will resonate with voters in the Palmetto State.
