On April 10, 2025, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., debuted a new look that will light up the night sky. Under the guidance of President Richard Grenell, the center has committed to illuminating its exterior in red, white, and blue every night. This change is meant to honor the United States and celebrate American values.
Roma Daravi, the Vice President of Public Relations at the Kennedy Center, shared that these colors symbolize unity and the American spirit. She emphasized that the Kennedy Center is a fitting place for such a tribute, as it serves as a national hub for the arts.
This decision marks a significant shift for the Kennedy Center. In recent years, the building has showcased various lighting themes. For example, it was lit up in different colors for a Nordic Festival in 2013 and used rainbow colors during the Kennedy Center Honors in 2017. It also displayed yellow and blue lights in support of Ukraine in 2022 and purple and amber for the Women’s Suffrage Centennial in 2020.
Grenell’s choice to permanently use red, white, and blue is a departure from the past. Unlike other landmarks that frequently change their lighting for different events or causes, the Kennedy Center will now consistently celebrate national pride.
The Kennedy Center has been in the spotlight since President Trump took office, promising to reform the institution. In February, he announced plans to revamp the center and halt performances that he deemed inappropriate for young audiences. His administration’s changes have sparked protests, including some unconventional forms of expression like interpretive dance.
Despite the backlash, the Kennedy Center has seen a surge in attendance. On March 29, it set a record, welcoming 11,000 guests, with a significant portion attending for the first time. The new lighting initiative is expected to further enhance its appeal and reinforce its commitment to American culture.
