The Pittsburgh Pirates are firmly against the idea of trading their star pitcher, Paul Skenes, despite a rough start to the season. General manager Ben Cherington made this clear when asked about the possibility before the team’s recent game against the Milwaukee Brewers, which the Pirates lost 8-5. Cherington responded, “No, it’s not part of the conversation at all,” emphasizing that Skenes is not on the trading block.
This speculation about trading Skenes has gained traction as the Pirates struggle with a 17-34 record, placing them at the bottom of the NL Central. Skenes, who won the National League Rookie of the Year award last season and started in the All-Star Game, has been a standout player for the team. This year, he holds a record of 3-5 with a 2.44 ERA, but his teammates have not provided enough run support. In his last six starts, the Pirates have scored only ten runs combined.
Skenes recently showcased his talent by throwing his first complete game, striking out nine batters in an eight-inning effort, though the Pirates still fell short, losing 1-0 to the Philadelphia Phillies. His performance has drawn attention from various media figures, including ESPN’s Jeff Passan and MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, who have suggested that the Pirates might consider trading him.
However, Cherington is not entertaining these discussions. He believes in Skenes’ potential and importance to the team, even amid the Pirates’ ongoing challenges. For now, it seems Skenes will remain a key part of Pittsburgh’s plans as they look to improve their season.
