Polish and allied aircraft were deployed early Wednesday morning to protect Poland’s airspace after Russia launched an air attack on Ukraine’s western regions, which are near the Polish border. The operational command of the Polish armed forces confirmed that both air and ground defense systems were placed on high alert.
Earlier reports from Ukraine’s air force indicated that Russian drones had entered Polish airspace, specifically threatening the city of Zamosc. However, this statement was later retracted from their Telegram messaging platform. As of midnight GMT, many areas of Ukraine, including the western regions of Volyn and Lviv adjacent to Poland, were under air raid alerts for several hours.
Ukrainian media also reported sightings of Russian drones crossing into Poland, but these claims have not been verified independently. Poland has not confirmed any incursions into its airspace overnight.
This incident highlights the ongoing tensions in the region as Poland, a NATO member, takes precautionary measures to safeguard its airspace amid the escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
