Pope Leo XIV has highlighted artificial intelligence as a significant challenge for humanity during his first formal audience. The Pope, who is the first from the United States, emphasized that the Catholic Church should lead efforts to address the threats posed by AI, particularly to workers.
In his address, the 69-year-old pontiff described AI as presenting new obstacles to human dignity, justice, and labor rights. He spoke to the cardinals who elected him, explaining that he chose the name Leo to honor Pope Leo XIII, who dealt with workers’ rights and capitalism during the industrial revolution. Leo XIII’s encyclical, Rerum Novarum, laid the groundwork for modern Catholic social thought.
Pope Leo XIV stated, "In our own day, the church offers everyone the treasury of its social teaching in response to another industrial revolution and to developments in the field of artificial intelligence." He acknowledged that AI brings challenges that need to be met with a focus on protecting human dignity.
The new Pope also expressed his commitment to continuing the modernizing reforms of his predecessor, Pope Francis. He aims to make the Church more inclusive and attentive to the needs of the faithful, particularly those who feel marginalized.
Throughout his address, Leo XIV reiterated the importance of the Church’s teachings in light of contemporary issues, including the ethical implications of AI. He called for a thoughtful approach to technology that prioritizes human values and rights.
As he embarks on his papacy, Pope Leo XIV is expected to engage with these pressing issues, ensuring the Church remains relevant in a rapidly changing world.
