Tensions between Israel and Qatar have escalated following accusations of a “genocidal war” in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded sharply to Qatar’s claims, urging the country to take a clear stance against Hamas. Netanyahu stated, “The time has come for Qatar to stop playing both sides with its double talk and decide if it’s on the side of civilization or if it’s on the side of Hamas barbarism.” He emphasized Israel’s commitment to what he called a just war.
Amichai Chikli, Israel’s Minister for Diaspora Affairs, echoed Netanyahu’s sentiments, criticizing Israel’s previous negotiations with Qatar and labeling it an enemy aligned with the Muslim Brotherhood.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson reacted to Netanyahu’s remarks, describing them as “inflammatory.” The spokesperson highlighted Qatar’s support for oppressed peoples and its commitment to international law. Qatar has been a significant player in the region, having hosted Hamas leaders and reportedly providing substantial funding to the group over the past decade.
The history of Qatar’s ties to terrorism is well-documented. Reports have surfaced about connections between the Qatari royal family and figures associated with Al-Qaeda, including allegations that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks, received assistance from Qatari royals during his time in hiding. Additional reports have indicated that known financiers of terrorism have lived freely in Qatar despite being on international watchlists.
Qatar is also known for owning the Al-Jazeera network, which has been criticized for giving a platform to Hamas leaders, including coverage of calls to arms following the October 7 attacks that resulted in over 1,200 Israeli casualties.
As the conflict continues, the rhetoric between Israel and Qatar shows no signs of easing, with both sides firmly entrenched in their positions.
