Rand Paul Cautions That Grand, Attractive Bill Will Skyrocket the Debt

Senator Rand Paul from Kentucky has voiced strong opposition to President Donald Trump’s recently passed “One Big, Beautiful Bill,” warning that it could lead to a significant increase in the national debt. In an interview on “Fox News Sunday” with Shannon Bream, Paul praised the tax cuts included in the bill but criticized the proposed spending cuts as lacking substance.

Paul expressed concern that the bill would add to the already staggering national debt, which stands at nearly $37 trillion. He highlighted the discrepancy between the House’s estimate of a $4 trillion increase and the Senate’s projections, which suggest it could be as high as $5 trillion. “The problem is the math doesn’t add up,” Paul stated, emphasizing that the current deficit is about $2.2 trillion.

While he acknowledged some of the bill’s intentions, such as reforming spending programs, Paul remains skeptical. He suggested that if the proposed debt ceiling increase were removed, he might reconsider his stance. He believes there should be a stronger commitment in Washington to address debt and deficits seriously.

Paul also proposed an amendment to raise the debt ceiling every three months, which would tie it to spending cuts. He criticized Republicans for following the same patterns as Democrats in avoiding tough decisions on spending. He warned that borrowing to fund programs like healthcare could exacerbate the deficit, leading to inflation that ultimately harms those the programs aim to help.

The senator stressed that the national debt poses a significant threat to U.S. national security and urged conservatives to speak out against it. “This is a problem we’ve been facing for decades now,” he said, expressing his fears about the country’s financial future if no action is taken.
