The Brooklyn Nets are embracing a youth movement as they head towards the end of a challenging season. With their playoff hopes dashed, the team has turned its focus to developing younger players. Reece Beekman, a rookie, has recently stepped into a more prominent role, making his first start in the NBA during a game against the Toronto Raptors.
Beekman expressed gratitude for the opportunity, noting that starting in his first year is a rare chance. He acknowledged the fast pace of the game and emphasized his ongoing learning process. In the game against the Raptors, Beekman had an impressive performance, scoring 14 points and contributing three rebounds, three assists, and three steals, which tied his career high.
The Nets have been experimenting with their lineup, especially with starting point guard D’Angelo Russell sidelined. Beekman’s emergence comes after limited playing time earlier in the season, where he sat out seven of eight games. His recent performance marks a significant step forward, as he had not scored in double figures until this game.
Other young players also made their mark in the matchup against Toronto. Maxwell Lewis added 13 points and four rebounds, while Drew Timme, a power forward recently signed from the G-League, also scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds in his first career start. Timme has been productive in his early games, joining an elite list of Nets players who have excelled in their first few outings.
Ziaire Williams contributed as well, scoring 11 points and showcasing his defensive skills. Coach Jordi Fernández highlighted the importance of improving shooting among the players, crediting consultant Dave Love for his assistance in this area. Fernández noted that coaching shooting can be challenging, but Love’s expertise has been beneficial for both players and coaches.
As the season winds down, the Nets are clearly focused on building for the future by giving their younger players valuable experience on the court.
