Repairs are currently underway on a new North Korean warship that encountered a serious mishap during its launch last week. The 5,000-ton vessel tipped over and started taking on water while being observed by Kim Jong Un, who appeared visibly upset by the incident.
The warship was launched from the northeastern port of Chongjin, but shortly after, it lost balance, resulting in damage to its hull. According to the state news agency KCNA, efforts to restore the ship’s balance are being carried out actively and according to a set schedule.
Kim Jong Un has expressed strong disapproval of the failed launch, labeling it a "criminal act." He stated that the incident has severely undermined the dignity and self-respect of North Korea and vowed to hold those responsible accountable. An investigation has already been initiated, leading to the arrest of several officials, including the chief engineer of the shipyard and the head of the hull construction workshop.
Initial inspections revealed no significant holes in the bottom of the warship, but there were scratches on the starboard hull. Water had entered the rear section through a rescue channel. Authorities have reported that the damage is not considered serious, and satellite images show the ship covered with a blue tarpaulin while it rests on its side.
Kim has directed that the ship be fully repaired before a major ruling party meeting scheduled for June. This incident has raised questions about the shipbuilding practices in North Korea and the potential consequences for those involved in the project.
