The Atlanta Braves are facing a tough start to the season as pitcher Reynaldo López will undergo surgery on his right shoulder. This procedure is set to take place soon, and he is expected to be sidelined for at least a couple of months. The news comes just a day after he was placed on the 15-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation.
López’s situation worsened after he threw a side session, which seemed fine initially, but he later decided to have his shoulder checked out. Braves manager Brian Snitker confirmed that there was inflammation present, prompting the team to seek further evaluation. The surgery aims to determine if there is any structural damage in his shoulder.
This setback is particularly disappointing for the Braves, who have already started the season with five straight losses, including a recent defeat to the Dodgers. In his first start of the season, López struggled, allowing three runs on nine hits and three walks against the Padres.
With López out, Bryce Elder will take over his spot in the starting rotation. The Braves are already dealing with other challenges, including the recent news that outfielder Jurickson Profar has been suspended for 80 games after testing positive for a banned substance.
López had an impressive previous season, posting a 1.99 ERA over 26 appearances and earning a spot in the All-Star Game. His absence will certainly be felt as the Braves look to turn their season around.
