At least two people lost their lives and 15 others were injured in a major attack by Russia on Ukraine overnight into Monday. The assault involved hundreds of missiles and drones targeting Kyiv and several other cities.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, around 450 missiles and drones were launched in this latest wave of violence. This strike came just before NATO officials were set to meet to discuss plans for increasing military support to Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that rescue and emergency operations are ongoing in affected areas. Damage has been noted in Kyiv, as well as in the Kharkiv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions. Attack drones were intercepted over several areas, including Sumy, Khmelnytskyi, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Poltava, and Kherson.
Zelensky highlighted the severe impact of the strikes, mentioning that a kindergarten caught fire and residential buildings were damaged. Tragically, a 12-year-old child was among those killed, and a subway station was struck.
In his message, Zelensky expressed gratitude to those working to defend lives in Ukraine, emphasizing the need for increased weapons production and stronger air defense. He underlined that real pressure on Russia is necessary to halt its aggression.
The ongoing conflict has taken a heavy toll on Ukraine. Estimates from the Center for Strategic and International Studies suggest that between 60,000 and 100,000 Ukrainians have died since Russia’s invasion began in February 2022. The Kremlin has resorted to recruiting convicts and has welcomed thousands of troops from North Korea, while avoiding conscription among the children of its elite.
Recent reports indicate that Russia has maintained a high level of military capability, launching over 11,000 missiles in just under two years. This sustained aggression is supported by logistical assistance from countries like Iran, North Korea, and China.
As the situation continues to unfold, the people of Ukraine remain resilient, facing the ongoing threat of violence with determination and courage.
