The trial of Sean "Diddy" Combs has officially started in Manhattan, New York. The jury selection process began this week, determining who will sit in judgment of the hip-hop mogul. Combs, dressed in a white shirt and black sweater, appeared calm as he entered the federal courtroom, greeting his legal team with hugs and handshakes.
The 55-year-old music executive has been in custody since his arrest in September 2024. He faces serious charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering, spanning over two decades. Combs has pleaded not guilty, claiming that all his sexual encounters were consensual and firmly denying any wrongdoing.
Due to the high-profile nature of this case, jury selection is expected to take the entire week. Opening statements from both sides are scheduled for next week. Unlike some other famous trials, this one will not be broadcast live, as federal courtrooms do not allow electronic recordings.
Judge Arun Subramanian began the proceedings by outlining the case and questioning potential jurors one by one. The goal is to form a jury of 12 members and six alternates who can remain fair and impartial despite the extensive media coverage surrounding the trial.
Jurors are being asked about their views on the prosecution and defense, personal experiences with crime, and opinions on hiring sex workers and illegal drugs. They are also questioned about their familiarity with various celebrities who may be mentioned during the trial. Some jurors have acknowledged hearing of actors like Michael B. Jordan and Kanye West, but they believe they can remain impartial.
Combs is accused of engaging in abusive behavior over many years, allegedly manipulating women into drug-fueled sexual activities, referred to as "Freak Offs." Prosecutors claim he used violence, including beatings and threats, when he did not get his way. Combs’ defense argues that all sexual activities were consensual and that there was no criminal enterprise involved.
If convicted, Combs could face decades in prison. The trial is expected to last around eight weeks.
One notable incident that may come up during the trial involves a 2016 video showing Combs allegedly attacking his then-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura. Cassie filed a lawsuit in November 2023 detailing years of abuse, which was settled shortly after. Combs has since apologized for his behavior, acknowledging that he was at a low point in his life.
As jury selection continues, all eyes remain on this high-stakes trial, which could have significant implications for Combs’ future.
